Volunteer

Cook‎

Prepare meals and snacks for campers and staff each day during camp.  Together with the Kitchen Coordinator/Head Cook, make sure meals are made on time.  Plan with Director times of meals and special event meals. Be aware and attentive to any staff & camper with special food needs or allergies - preparing meals that accommodate those needs. Keep the kitchen organized and clean, and assist in mentoring younger kitchen staff and volunteers.

Kitchen Staff‎

Responds to the head cook. Prepares daily meals, and snacks from the menu. Serves food. Keeps the kitchen tidy. Being apart of teamwork in the kitchen.​

Male & Female Cabin Leaders‎

Model and teach Christ-likeness in attitude, action, and word. Prepare and lead cabin devotions with campers. Be eager to participate in all activities with campers. Develop sincere relationships with campers. Care and look out for the safety and hygiene of campers.  Help with daily option activities. Develop and help train Junior Cabin Leader.​

Junior Cabin Leaders (must be 16 or have completed LEAD)‎

Model and teach Christ-likeness in attitude, action, and word. Prepare and lead cabin devotions with campers. Be eager to participate in all activities with campers. Develop sincere relationships with campers. Care and look out for the safety and hygiene of campers.  Help with daily option activities. Responds to the Senior Cabin Leader.​

Volunteer

Crafts Director

Plan and execute crafts for the appropriate age of campers. Responds to the Director or Co-Director. Runs craft option during activity time. Preps craft space and materials beforehand. Makes sure the craft space is clean and organized after each activity. ​

Childcare Staff (must be 14 or older or have equivalent experience/training)‎

Watching over the volunteer’s children could be from 1 -12 years of age. The number of children in childcare differs each week depending on the parent volunteers. Planning and doing games/activities with the kids. At camp, we have a playground for the child care. Communicate with parents in regards to child discipline, routine, snacks, and child-specific care. Ensures the safety and well-being of children in his/her care. Plans and coordinates a daily activity schedule for child/children, which meets the approval of the Program Director, appropriate staff leader, and the parent(s). Arranges with the parent regarding time off.​

Supports Activities Director. Organizing and running activities. Setting up for activities. Responds to the Activities Director

Works with the Director to execute the program before and during camp. See Director description for more details.​

Director

Determine a schedule of activities (program) for the camp­ers to be involved in during the time you are a director.  This program should reflect the philosophy, goals, and standards of both Salem Acres Bible Camp and yourself; should be appropriate to the age of the campers, and should include any on-going or esta­blished programs that are run by Salem Acres Bible Camp.  Ensure that camp discipline and order is maintained.  This involves enforcing the rules, regulations, and standards set both by you and by the camp administration. Provide leadership, support, and feedback to the staff.​

Speaker

Work closely with the Director in adjusting the program to suit the spiritual needs of the camp (e.g. staff devotions, camper devotions, prayer times, and spiritual status reports). Plan, prepare and implement chapel talks, object lessons, firesides, etc. as previously arranged for the program. Speak at chapels and campfires each day. Share the gospel during the week. Provide devotional material for the Cabin Leaders and Support Staff. Be committed to prayer in every aspect of your involvement at camp. Provide spiritual leadership during the camp and give feedback to the staff team on issues that may be of ongoing spiritual concern.​

 

Volunteer

Maintenance Staff‎

Working with our Facilities Director in doing different tasks around the facility. This can range from painting to chopping firewood, to creating paths in the forest, wasp control, and fixing toilets and doorknobs. Assist with regular safety checks of all equipment, facilities, and areas. Become fully acquainted with facilities, grounds, and emergency procedures. Perform all related duties as designated by the Facilities Manager.

Staff Positions

Requirements for Canada Summer Jobs Grants Positions:

  1. be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

  2. be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,

  3. have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Media Coordinator

The Media Coordinator is responsible for preparing videos and other media for camp events and activities and for assisting speakers in the preparation and delivery of their presentation material. Additional responsibility includes recording and producing a wide variety of media sources relating to the camp activities and events - including creating digital media for distribution to campers, parents and staff; and for use in other camp publicity and information [e.g. website, social media, printed material).

Activity Director / Program Coordinator

The Activity Director recommends and plans camp activities, ensuring all activities are appropriate for each age/ability group and in keeping with the summer theme and mission of the camp. He/she will organize and lead a variety of camp activities each day, help campers prepare skits and/or songs for fireside nights, be proactive in encouraging positive behaviour and teamwork, and accommodate behavioural challenges. He/she is responsible to always ensure a clean, organized and safe camp activity environment is present. He/she shall ensure activities are designed to maximize key learning objectives and are inherently safe in their design. The Activity Director will guide and mentor younger staff in our leadership programs by leading and participating in Bible study, chapel and campfire. He/she is responsible for scheduling, documentation of visitors, and aiding volunteers in carrying out theme-related duties.

Staff Training and Development Supervisor

The Staff Training and Development Supervisor provides support and guidance to cabin leaders, youth participants in our leadership programs, and support services for the camp program (maintenance, kitchen and janitorial staff) in dealing with relationship building, camper
relations, safety, and campers participation and enjoyment of camp program. They are also required to participate in the mentoring of youth volunteers through leading and participating in Bible study. They are responsible for providing mental health support to all staff, paid and volunteer, and do so through scheduled and unscheduled check-ins. They may also provide help in
the form of covering unforeseen vacancies in positions – i.e. if a cabin leader gets sick or needs a chance to rest after a rough night, the Staff Care Leader will cover duties and provide optimal care for children throughout the summer.

Cabin Leader‎

The Cabin Leader/Childcare Workers provide care for children and youth at our beautiful location overlooking the Red Deer River Valley. Our summer camp program includes canoeing, tenting and hiking, archery, paintball, crafts, go-kart racing, soccer, skits, tetherball, basketball, and many other outdoor games. The Cabin Leader / Childcare Worker assists in activities specific to the spiritual and personal development side of camp such as including campers in biblical discussions, prayer, music, singing, and developing friendships and support networks at camp and at home. Finally, it includes leading and participating with campers in carrying out work duties such as cleaning dishes, cabins, etc.

Camp Nurse / First Aider

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Camp Nurse is responsible for the overall clinical operation of camp. The Camp Nurse is responsible for the care of ill or injured campers and staff, and related administrative duties. The Camp Nurse ensures the nursing station is kept clean and stocked with appropriate supplies and medications; maintains clear, accurate and
concise records on all campers and staff; keep a daily medical log, and maintains and documents the camper/staff chart; dispenses and keeps a record of daily medications administered; makes sure that medications brought to camp are locked in the medication cupboard; provides first aid packs for rafting and hiking and restocks after each trip; provides Epi-Pens and any prescribed camper medication to staff before departure; administers camper (and staff) prescription medications as directed; dispenses over-the-counter medications per our medication policy; assesses campers and staff who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed; assists in stabilizing campers and staff requiring transportation to medical facilities; contact with parents of ill or injured campers and staff (if appropriate) and updates as necessary; documentation of all injuries and care rendered; documentation of all over-the-counter medicines; maintain inventory of supplies; and counselling as needed (such as homesick campers).

Kitchen Coordinator‎/Head Cook

The Kitchen Coordinator / Head Cook is responsible for the delivery of food services at camp including menu design, scheduling, allergies, food ordering, food preparation and delivery, and kitchen cleaning/standards. They will also provide leadership for AHS Food Safety Standards, food preparation, service and storage. The Kitchen Coordinator / Head Cook will also assist in mentoring and leading younger kitchen volunteers.

Worship / Performing Arts Coordinator

The Performing Arts Coordinator organizes, plans, and implements music to accompany campfire and chapel sessions. This can entail recruitment and scheduling of a music team. He/she will set the outline for each week in accordance with developmentally appropriate songs for the corresponding age groups, and will prepare materials such as song sheets or PowerPoint slides. The Performing Arts Coordinator is also responsible for assisting speakers in the preparation and delivery of their presentation material. This can mean providing skits, plays, dances, and other forms of artistic expression in order to bring clarity and better understanding for the children. He/she will also be responsible to plan, supervise, and lead Art Options for campers, which include, but are not limited to: music, dance, jewelry making, painting, string art, sun-dry pottery and painting, etc.

Facilities Safety Officer

The Facilities Safety Officer works with our full-time Facilities Coordinator to aid with the preparation of camp facilities for the summer season. He/she is necessary in order to provide a clean and safe environment for children to participate in programmed activities. Tasks will include renovations of camp buildings, maintaining equipment and utilities, as well as building and
installing new recreational apparatuses, and insect/pest removal. Responsibilities include maintaining the cleanliness of kitchen and dining hall facilities and assisting the Facilities Coordinator where needed. He/she will be equipped to train incoming summer staff and volunteers in these responsibilities.

Camp In The City / Day Camp Coordinator

Develop and implement an off-site day summer camp program at various locations around Alberta. Develop and distribute marketing materials. Promote and build partnerships, and book and schedule locations with churches/community groups. Develop and implement all policies and procedures. Cross-promote camper and volunteer involvement at the Salem Acres Bible Campsite. Plan and facilitate daily staff meetings and mentoring of team members and volunteers. Be responsible for all
aspects of this program.
